Ma recherche actuelle se focalise sur la bioarchéologie humaine et archéothanatologie, surtout eu égard aux changements osseux d’activité physique et aux handicaps orthopédiques et à l’archéologie funéraire, paléopathologie et paléodémographie, en Europe et au Proche-Orient du Paléolithique jusqu’au Moyen Âge tardif. J’utilise les données des études de l’anthropologie biologique dans leur contexte archéologique pour fournir un aperçu de l’organisation sociale des sociétés du passé, le développement de l’inégalité sociale, la violence et la guerre, les élites et les spécialistes des pratiques rituelles, ainsi que les dispositions archéologiques et modification des ossements lié aux prestations des rites funéraires du passé.

Current research links social archaeology and skeletal biology/osteoarchaeology, especially with regard to activity-related bone change and orthopaedic disabilities; funerary archaeology, with an emphasis Europe and Western Asia from the Palaeolithic to the Later Medieval periods; palaeopathology and palaeodemography. Recent research centres on the use of biological anthropological data within its archaeological context to provide insights into past social organisation: the development of social inequality, violence and warfare, élites and ritual specialists, as well as the definition of archaeological patterning and bone assemblage modification relating to the performance of past funerary rites.

Coordination d’opérations archéologiques et/ou programmes de recherche en cours

Chef (avec Clark Spencer Larsen de l’Université de Ohio State, États-Unis) du laboratoire des restes humains (l’étude au laboratoire et au chantier, aspects biologique autant que funéraire) à Çatalhöyük, près de Konia (Anatolie centrale, Turquie) fouillé par Ian Hodder (l’Université de Stanford, Californie, États-Unis), qui comprend vers six semaines par an au site de 2012 à 2018 pour fouiller et analyser les restes humains et pour former la synthèse bioarchéologique (gestes funéraires, archéothanatologie, l’ostéologie humaine, paléopathologie, taphonomie) avec d’autres équipes, laboratoires et du terrain. Un programme de publication, articles, chapitres, base de donné, est en place. Ce programme de recherche est financé par un Chaire Senior de l’IdEx (Initiative d’Excellence de l’Université de Bordeaux), National Geographic Society et le British Academy).

Head (with Clark Spencer Larsen from Ohio State University, USA) of the human remains laboratory (laboratory study and excavation, biological as well as funerary aspects) at Çatalhöyük, near Konya (Central Anatolia, Turkey ) excavated by Ian Hodder (Stanford University, California, USA), which included around six weeks per year at the site from 2012 to 2018 to excavate and analyze human remains and to form the bioarchaeological synthesis (funerary gestures, archaeothanatology , human osteology, paleopathology, taphonomy) with other on-site laboratories and with the field team. A publication programme, including articles, chapters in the book series, and database and website are in place. This research program is funded by a Senior Chair from the IdEx (Initiative of Excellence of the University of Bordeaux), National Geographic Society and the British Academy).
