A new culture, in China, 40 000 years ago When did populations of Homo sapiens first arrive in China and what happened when they met the Denisovans who lived there? An international team of researchers reveals the discovery of a 40,000-year-old site in the north of the country frequented by a population that knapped stone in an original way, used bone tools, hafted their tools wiht bone handles, and used large quantities of red pigments. The cultural traits identified at Xiamabei, the name of the site do not correspond to those described at archaeological sites inhabited by archaic populations in the region or those generally associated with the expansion of modern populations. The discovery of this new archaeological culture suggests the existence of processes of innovation and cultural diversification emerging during a period of genetic and cultural hybridization.
