Skeletalchronology

par Frédéric Santos - publié le

Coordinator : Éric Pubert.

Skeletalchronology focuses on growth structures present in hard animal materials (primarily bone and teeth). Cementochronology, which is the main technique used at PACEA, analyses successive dental cementum deposits, which are mineralised tissue found on the teeth of mammals. Work over the last few decades, first by biologists and medical professionals, followed by zooarchaeologists and anthropologists, has produced evidence for a number of key moments in the development of cementum. The most important is the successive formation of two deposits during each year of an animal’s life and the repetition of this cycle throughout their lifetime.
