Sediments and characterisation of archaeomaterials

While the large research questions tackled by PACEA have generally remained the same over the last decade, the methods and analytical tools necessary to address them continue to develop. This can be seen as a response to, on the one hand, major technological advances over the last ten years and, on the other hand, to the fact that the scientific community rapidly integrated these advances, leading to new standards in the presentation of results.

Keeping up to speed with these demands requires constant attention. The pertinence of new analytical methods needs to be evaluated, new equipment needs testing, collaborations with public and private institutions require development, and financing must be acquired for the purchase of new cutting-edge instruments.

Our laboratory committed itself early on in this direction by developing the appropriate methodologies to respond to these needs. Even more importantly, a variety of high-performance instruments (laser granulometry, Raman spectrometry, X-ray florescence, spectrometry, infra-red spectrometry, confocal-interfermometer microscopy) and staff have taken the analysis of sediments and archaeomaterials to a new level. The lab’s numerous publications highlight the speed in which these tools have been integrated in our research.

This methodological focus on the study of sediments and the characterisation of archaeomaterials reflects our drive to enter into a new stage of research, one that improves our competences in particular areas and creates new analytical tools while broadening their applicability to all the lab’s research themes. This includes consolidating certain research fields and opening new avenues of inquiry as well as promoting the formation of master’s, doctoral and post-doctoral students in the use of new equipment and data analysis.
