Multidimensional Imagery

The florescence of new digital techniques has added a new dimension to scientific imagery that goes beyond the relatively “accurate” recording of indirectly or directly observable forms to produce a new generation of visual reconstructions. Two- and three-dimensional surface scans and volumetric reconstructions are possible at multiple scales, from the microscopic to the geomorphological, and for all types of archaeological materials.

Digital imagery has already been successfully applied in certain areas of biological anthropology during the five-year period between 2011-2015. Novel developments accompanied by analytical innovations have led to the creation of new software and patents. As part of PACEA’s new global research project, multidimensional imagery will be extended to include all materials and structures addressed by other areas of the lab’s research (cultures and environment) in a way that will further reinforce its strengths. This project benefits from both a high-performance technological environment (state of the art analytical instruments, particularly microscopy and micro-CT scans) and direct collaborations with members of UMS Archéovision and LaBRI (Laboratoire Bordelais de Recherche Informatique) and their considerable expertise in digital imagery.
