PACEA is a mixed research unit attached to the CNRS, the University of Bordeaux and the Ministry of Culture and Communication. We have a framework agreement with the INRAP and host personnel from the EPHE (“Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes”).

The lab’s research activity comprises three multi-disciplinary themes and multiple methodological axes connected to technical facilities :

  • From biological diversity to bioarchaeology (Coords. D. Cochard, C. Knüsel)
  • The archaeology of death, ritual and symbols (Coords. J. Jaubert, S. Rottier)
  • Environments, populations, and lifeways (Coords. I. Crevecoeur, M. Langlais)

Four methodological axes bring together analytical techniques for which the unit is one of the leaders in the field. The development of these analytical protocols is linked in part to the lab being equipped with the latest high-end equipment for imaging, palaeogenetics, sedimentology and the analysis of archaeo-materials, but above all the development of innovative research methodologies.

Part of the University of Bordeaux campus, PACEA works primarily with IRAMAT (CRP2A) and AUSONIUS within the framwork of the Labex LaScArBx (coord. V. Fromentin) and Fédération des Sciences Archéologiques de Bordeaux (coord. B. Maureille).

As of the 1st of January 2018, PACEA comprises 27 researchers (4 emeritus), 13 lecturing researchers, 23 engineers and technicians, 21 members of the INRAP and territorial entities, 19 doctoral students, 15 contractual researchers and engineers, for a total of 118 members. Finally, 52 research associates also actively participate in the lab’s research programme.
